I flew into Boston right after Spanish class on Friday morning. After I was picked up at the airport on the Massachusetts end by the wonderful Valerie Austin, the northeastern Jr. Miss go-to, we rushed to the auditorium where the MAJM program was in full swing and I arrived just in time to help emcee the second half of the program.
That night, I went out to dinner with the Ostrows, the wonderful family I stayed with. Alina Ostrow is Massachusetts Jr. Miss for 2009 and she and her family were so great to let me stay with them while I was in MA. They’re the greatest family and I had an absolute blast throughout the entire weekend.
After dinner, we went back home, and although wiser people would have gone to bed, Alina and I stayed up catching up until around 3:30 in the morning, a decision we regretted when we had to get up only a few hours later…
Saturday morning we went to a hotel for the participants’ Be Your Best Self program presentation. Together with about 15 young girls from the area, we went through the 5 parts to Be Your Best Self, and colored butterflies’ wings with images of each. My butterfly picture is now hanging proudly in my dorm room!
After the presentation came to a close, Alina and I went out for a lunch and a driving tour of the lovely Franklin, Mass, including the nation’s first public library.
After short (but wonderful) naps, we headed back to the auditorium for a quick warm-up and then prep for the show that night. Everything went wonderfully! I once again got to emcee about half of the program, as well as a little on-stage AJM interview and a rendition of Taylor, the Latte Boy- he has become very near and dear to my heart.
The night ended delightfully! A big congratulations to Meagan Fuller, Massachusetts Junior Miss 2010!
After the winner was announced, everyone headed over to the hotel for a meet and greet and congratulate, fortunately complete with lots and lots of food! The next morning, after a completely fantastic pancake breakfast and a final meeting with Meagan about what’s ahead, I headed toward Boston and the airport with all the Ostrows. They showed me around, and we had a great lunch in Quincy Yard. Boston seems so wonderful, I’d love to go back sometime in the summer and spend a lot of time seeing all that there is to see.
Sadly, the weekend came to an end. Alina and I went our separate ways at the airport terminal, and I was soon on a plane back to old Chicago. I had a great, great weekend, and Alina has promised she’s coming to visit me soon! And make no mistake, I plan to hold her to that!
